Tesco Turns EV Charging into a Loyalty Power Play

Tesco links Clubcard points to EV charging, blending shopping perks with green travel incentives.

Tesco is making electric vehicle charging a little more rewarding. The supermarket giant has teamed up with Pod Point to offer Clubcard points every time drivers plug in at its charging stations.

Since June, Clubcard members earn one point for every £1 spent at over 2,600 Pod Point chargers spread across more than 600 Tesco car parks. There is an extra kicker for those installing home chargers, too, with new subscribers pocketing a 2,500-point welcome bonus.

Neither Tesco nor Pod Point has shared usage stats yet, but both expect this to nudge more shoppers towards EVs while increasing visits and charger use. Thanks to a smooth tech integration between Clubcard and Pod Point’s systems, customers automatically collect points with no apps, scans or extra steps required.

With 20 million Clubcard members and a fast-growing charging network, Tesco is betting that rewarding drivers at the plug will build customer loyalty and encourage greener habits. Pod Point, in turn, gets a steady stream of repeat users. For EV drivers, it is a two-for-one deal: charge up and earn rewards while doing the weekly shop.

Experts see this as a glimpse of a broader shift, where loyalty schemes push not just products but sustainable behaviours. If it works, more retailers could jump on board, turning ordinary car parks into future-ready energy hubs.

The plan is not without challenges. Data privacy and billing accuracy are under scrutiny, with GDPR and financial regulations firmly in play.

Next up, Tesco and Pod Point are eyeing off-peak discounts, hoping to ease grid pressure by rewarding shoppers for charging at quieter times.

If successful, this quiet revolution could change more than just loyalty programs. It could reshape how Britain shops, travels, and powers up.
