From Fuel Pumps to Fast Plugs: Hubber’s Bold City Bet

The race to electrify Britain’s cities is gaining speed. London-based startup Hubber has raised £60 million to roll out a network of ultra-fast charging hubs, aiming to plug a major gap in the UK’s electric vehicle infrastructure.

Backed by private investors, the deal ranks among the largest recent bets on urban charging. Hubber’s founders, former members of Tesla’s UK Supercharger team, are bringing hard-won expertise to one of the toughest challenges in clean transport: giving city drivers reliable access to power.

The company’s first flagship hub opens soon in Lewisham, south-east London, offering multiple high-speed chargers for both private and fleet vehicles. Over the next two years, Hubber plans to launch at least 30 more sites across major cities, prioritizing neighborhoods where grid capacity and charging options have lagged behind surging EV demand.

“Urban charging is the next frontier,” said one co-founder. “Our goal is to make powering an EV as simple as filling up at a petrol station.”

With roughly 40 percent of UK homes lacking off-street parking, dependable public charging is no longer a luxury. The government aims for 300,000 public charge points by 2030, setting off fierce competition among councils and private operators to secure space and grid access.

Investors are watching closely as clean-air mandates, fleet electrification, and consumer expectations converge to reshape the sector. But hurdles remain, from city planning red tape to the rising cost of hardware and land.

Even so, Hubber’s rapid rise marks a turning point. As Britain drives toward a zero-emission future, the charge is no longer confined to motorways. It’s moving into the neighborhoods where people actually live, redefining how cities stay in motion.
